The Faculty of Life Science and Technology was established in 2007 under the Division of Life and Medical Sciences of Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST). As a research-oriented high-level college of KUST, the Faculty stresses the socialist orientation in school running, fully implements the Party's education policy, notes that the fundamental mission of education is to cultivate virtues and morality, and makes active efforts to build a desirable educational environment. It has been rated as an Advanced Party Organization at the Grass-roots Level by the education system of Yunnan Province and the May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee of Yunnan Province.

There are 105 faculty and staff members in the Faculty and the Institute of Primate Translational Medicine, including 39 with senior titles, 36 with deputy senior titles, and 27 doctoral supervisors. Among them, one has been inducted as an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one high-end scientific and technological talent in Yunnan Province as well as high-level overseas talent of Yunnan Province, three named Outstanding Talent in the New Century by the Ministry of Education, 13 young and middle-aged academic and technical leaders and reserve talents in Yunnan Province, three technological innovation talents in Yunnan Province, two Yunling scholars, two Yunling young talents, three young talents in Yunnan Province's "High-level Talent Introduction Program", and 16 in Yunnan Province's "Ten Thousand Talents Program"

Over 300 projects initiated by the Faculty and the Institute of Primate Translational Medicine have been supported by China's National Key R&D Program, Key Projects of China's National Key R&D Program, the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), the National Key Technology R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Major and Special Program of Yunnan Province, with a total research funding of more than 416.6 million yuan, ranking first in KUST in terms of ongoing research projects and funding per capita. Besides, they have published a large number of research results including CNS papers.

The Faculty has partnered with the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, several key laboratories and engineering technology centers of Yunnan Province and many other research platforms and innovation teams in Yunnan Province.

Two undergraduate majors are offered at the faculty: Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering. The former is a major with unique features of Yunnan Province, which was accredited by China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (CEEAA) in 2017 and selected into provincial first-class undergraduate programs in 2019. The latter is a major of eight industry brands in Yunnan Province, which was accredited and re-accredited by CEEAA in 2014 and 2017 respectively, and selected into national first-class undergraduate programs in 2019.

The Faculty is entitled to grant doctorate degree on Biological Science as a first-level discipline, master degree on Biological Science and Pharmaceutical Science as first-level disciplines, and master degree on Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering, while boasting a national post-doctorate center of Biological Science. Therefore, an integrated training system has been formed for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs and post-doctorate center, covering biology, pharmacy, medicine and engineering, as well as overlapping with biochemistry, environmental science and engineering, etc.

Among the first colleges and universities in Yunnan Province to pilot innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, the Faculty has won dozens of awards in Scientific and Technological Innovation & Discipline Competition, China College Students "Internet Plus" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the National College Students Life Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

Whilst joining hands with Walvax Biotechnology Co., Ltd. to build the State-level Project Practice Education Center, it has independently accomplished Yunnan Pharmaceutical Engineering Simulation Practice Center, and engineering training laboratories for students, such as Bioengineering Fermentation Training Center, Pharmaceutical Engineering Training Center and Beer Fermentation Production Line. It has also established and maintained sound school-enterprise partnerships with several pharmaceutical and biological manufacturers inside and outside the province, including Huarun Shenghuo, Panlong Yunhai, and Ideal Pharmaceutical, and built over 20 off-campus enterprise practice bases.

The Faculty keeps an open mind about schooling and is actively engaged in international cooperation. It has maintained long-term good cooperation with a number of famous universities and research institutes at home and abroad, and has frequent international exchanges in scientific research, teaching and personnel training.

The Faculty was founded to develop students serving the national strategy and the development and construction of bio-medicine and health industry in Yunnan Province. With this end in view, it gets the utmost out of Yunnan's biological resources, and focuses on research on key technical issues of human health and related industrial development, thus providing a large number of human resources for economic and social development.
