For a university, teaching is its basic function, scientific research an important function, and serving the society a necessary function. While adhering to the basic social service function of teaching and educating people, the Faculty, a key life science discipline in KUST, spends great efforts in basic and applied scientific research, enabling its scientific research achievements to benefit and promote teaching and production. Since its inception, the Faculty has been carrying on the "indomitable spirit", giving full play to the disciplinary advantages of the two undergraduate majors of bioengineering and pharmacy and pharmaceutical engineering. By centering on the "green food" and "healthy living destination" philosophies in the "three philosophies" of green industry development in Yunnan Province, the Faculty has established its focuses in terms of social service, including technology promotion, achievement commercialization, counterpart support, poverty alleviation, and talent training for the society. Over the years, the Faculty has carried out fruitful research and service work in the fields of food testing and development, biomedicine and health, and made important contributions to the local economic development of Yunnan Province.

It also serves the society via various scientific research and testing platforms. Leveraging its scientific research platform, the Faculty has organized experts to go deep into hospitals, schools, governments, rural areas and enterprises in the province to carry out technical training and consultation, and make pertinent suggestions for boosting the local economy. Many in the Faculty participated in poverty alleviation at national, provincial and municipal levels, and many scientific research achievements were transferred to local farmers and enterprises free of charge in Xuanwei poverty alleviation points. While commercializing scientific and technological achievements and providing social services, the Faculty also attaches great importance to the mechanism construction, which fully guarantees the interests of teachers in the process of social services. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the faculty and staff will continue to go deep into the front line of teaching, scientific research and production, make constant reform and innovation, and take the training of management cadres, professional technical and practical talents, the commercialization and application of outstanding achievements as the starting point, so as to enable the Faculty to better serve the society and win a greater reputation for KUST.

The Faculty pays attention to foreign cooperation and exchanges. Under the guidance of its Foreign Cooperation and Exchange Office, it has established long-term and stable friendly cooperation and exchange relations with universities and scientific research institutions in the United States, Germany, France, and Britain, as well as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and other countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia. It regularly and irregularly invites top experts in professional fields at home and abroad to give academic lectures to the teachers and students, so as to broaden their international horizons. Meanwhile, it has offered master, doctor and postdoctoral programs to many from India, Pakistan, Laos and other countries.

It also attaches great importance to cooperation and exchanges with local governments, universities, research institutes, enterprises and institutions within Yunnan and other provinces in the country. It has established extensive partnerships with the administrative departments of science and technology and agriculture in Kunming, Zhaotong, Pu'er, Lijiang, Chuxiong and other prefectures, and has carried out a number of substantive university-to-university and university-enterprise cooperation projects with local enterprises, which has promoted the sustainable development of teaching and scientific research. The Faculty has entered into partnerships with Kunming Huarun Shenghuo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Panlong Yunhai Group, Yunnan Ideal Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Yunnan Bio-Valley Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Walvax Biotechnology Co., Ltd., New Hope Xuelan Milk, and other enterprises in the province to build practice bases for undergraduates in KUST. These partnerships have greatly supported the practice activities of undergraduates in the Bioengineering Center and the Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Engineering Center.
